Backroads Recent and Local
Please come and join me at the Newark Arts Alliance for my first solo exhibit since 2004!
This collection of work from the last couple years represents my attraction to and affection for our local and regional landscapes. Represented here is New Castle County, Cecil County, Chester and Lancaster counties, with forays into the north Pennsylvania wilds and the eternal mountains of the Shenandoah. Born and raised in Delaware, and now a long time Fair Hill Maryland resident, I feel a deep connection to the area and the rhythms of its seasons and scenery. Conversely, I’m attracted to the mountains. I’ve spent the past 15 years visiting and photographing the Appalachians, Rockies, Sierra Nevada, and North Cascades, as well as the deserts of the Southwest. These are spectacular and complex scenes and images. While spellbinding, these travels have taught me an even greater appreciation for my home area. One must live with something to gain true knowledge.
I wander the backroads with my camera striving to capture compositions, light and weather phenomena, and occasionally someone fishing or hiking. Areas I return to repeatedly include Delaware Route 9, Fair Hill Natural Resource Area, the Susquehanna River, and Blue Ridge of Virginia. These places are peaceful and provide wide vistas and great golden hour light.
I consider my style contemporary realism subtly influenced by abstract expressionism. I try to keep things loose and expressive while maintaining energy in the act of painting. For me, it’s about color, fluidity of the medium, line, expression, the composition, and resisting the momentum towards over-finishing the work. However, like a good musician knows, the technique must serve the song.
